PART ONE Cuban and Spanish Origins

The earliest record for this family in Louisiana, at least the earliest that I know of, is for the baptism of Manuel Valeriano de Lomba y Acosta in St. Bernard Parish 8 May 1803. The record states that Manuel's father Francisco Xavier de Lomba was born in Havana, Cuba, the son of Francisco de Lomba and Antonia Deogracias (Molero).

Passenger lists show that the Molero family spent four years in Cuba, 1779-1783, on their way from the Canary Islands to Louisiana. Regardless of their plans, this four-year stay over was enforced by the English navy, which kept control of all sea traffic in the area during the American Revolution. If one compares the passenger list of 1779 with that of 1783, one notices the addition of a new, youngest child, named Francisco. It is quite likely that the  mother of the Molero children who came to Cuba was beyond child-bearing years by the time Francisco would have been born. It seems quite possible that this child was actually Francisco Xavier de Lomba, born in Havana during the period of the stay-over and now accompanying his mother Antonia and her family to Louisiana. This implies, as well, that Antonia had met and married Francisco de Lomba during the stay-over at Havana. One may speculate that the new husband died before his in-laws left for Louisiana; there is no indication that he ever got to Louisiana himself.

To know more about the background of the father Francisco de Lomba, it will be necessary to find the record of his marriage in Havana or the baptismal record of his son there. This, of course, will be impossible until Cuban-American relations become much more cordial than they have been.

Francisco de Lomba and Antonia Deogracias Molero had the following child:

            i. FRANCISCO XAVIER DE LOMBA was born on 01 Feb 1782 in Havana, Ciego de Avila, Cuba. He died in 1825 in Louisiana, United States. He married (1) MANUELA ANTONIA ACOSTA about 1802, daughter of Juan de Acosta and Lucia Mendez. She died between 1810-1817. He married (2) MARIA MANUELA BARRIOS between 1815-1818, daughter of Manuel Miguel de Barrios and Maria Mera. She was born on 25 Dec 1798 in Carnary Islands, Spain. She died on 12 Oct 1835 in Louisiana, United States.
